Political spat over ‘progress’
Topic tags
CyprusCONFUSION reigned yesterday among the political parties as to where the talks between President Demetris Christofias and Turkish Cypriot leader Mehmet Ali Talat stood, and where they might go once UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon arrives on the island today.
The mixed messages emerging from political circles were apparently a result of the way in which party leaders received updates on the intensive talks after Friday’s session ended. Neither Chistofias nor Talat made a public statement, leaving UN Special Advisor Alexander Downer to tell the press that “significant progress” had been made without giving any details. Christofias then gave “an initial briefing” to the leaders of AKEL, DISY, DIKO and EDEK by phone on Friday evening, and EVROKO and the Greens yesterday.
DIKO spokesman Fotis Fotiou told state broadcaster CyBC yesterday that following the briefing, DIKO leader and House President Marios Garoyian had said that “there did not appear to have been any positive developments in the extensive talks”. Fotiou added that his party has supported and will continue to support the President’s position that he will not agree to a half-way solution, timeframes and arbitration.
AKEL leader Andros Kyprianou said yesterday that “effort is being made to continue the (talks) process”, adding that the UN Secretary-General’s presence in Cyprus “will boost the current effort”.
Kyprianou said that it was “ridiculous” to suggest that the recent proposals from the Turkish side had been discussed, adding that there was “no possibility” that Christofias would agree to positions they presented.
Opposition DISY leader Nicos Anastassiades said yesterday that there appeared to have been a difference in the way certain points had been dealt with by the other side. However, he added that one cannot talk about “impressive progress” having been made when just one topic – governance - had been discussed.
Anastassiades suggested that any sticking-points could be raised during Ban Ki-moon’s visit, which he said “could give a boost” to the talks process.
EVROKO leader Demetris Sillouris said that the way the talks are proceeding had produced a “strange and dangerous climate”.
Government spokesman Stefanos Stefanou rejected suggestions that Ban’s visit would lead to the “locking in” of concessions that the Greek Cypriot side is supposed to have made, repeating the position that there will be no agreement if everything is not agreed. He added that there would be no mediation or arbitration during the Secretary-general’s visit.
Stefanou said that the UN Secretary-General was visiting the island to express his support for the efforts of the two leaders to find a solution, and not to put forward any proposals or ideas, or to carry out mediation or arbitration. He added that the government welcomes the involvement of the UN and other international actors, but “in the right direction and on the correct basis”, underlining once again that the process is “owned by the Cypriots”.
Asked whether he agreed with Downer’s statement on Friday that there had been “positive progress” in the talks, Stefanou said that “significant progress had been made on the subject of governance”, but declined to give details.

Kyriacos, we need a few more LEVENTES/MAGKES true Cypriots to share your opinion and we will have the Cyprus problem solved once and for all. So, that we can move forward with our lives and start building our economy and our democracy so that we are proud to be Cypriots.
Personally I do not care about the language that a compatriot of mine is speaking and definitely I do not care if he/she belives in God/Allah/Boudha.......
But, we really need to FIGHT to UNITE our country as now we have to worry:
> foreign armies in the island
> settlers
> apparently 10,000 concerned Orams type of foreigners
that they do NOT want to see us solving the problem
ΘΕΛΕΙ ΑΡΕΤΗ ΚΑΙ ΤΟΛΜΗ Η ΕΛΕΥΘΕΡΙΑ.........
Need Virtue and DARE/GUTS TO demand your FREEDOM
Do we have the guts?

Kyriacos well said...
I wish more Cypriots thought the same way as you do. One day hopefully the Cypriots that are truly Cypriot in the heart will prevail. There is always hope as long as there are people to keep the spirit of good will alive.
Supporting and cherishing a Cypriot identity is the most important thing all Cypriots must hold true to. Only foreign Cypriots truely understand how important it is to have an identity. To be destinguish as what you are (not Greek or Turkish .. not from Greece or from Turkey.. or even of those lands, but of Cyprus).
Otherwise why be called Cypriot at all. Do the Americans call themselves "British Americans"!!
Kyriacos Roumbas from Cyprus comments:
One more thing I would like to say. I believe that people who write comments on this site should stop bitching to each other and about each other and start building bridges between themselves. Neither Greece, Turkey, the British or the Americans want us to be United. They used and continue to use the oldest propaganda game in the world, which is to divide and rule and that is what they have been doing for over 40 years, not only here in Cyprus but other parts of the world as well. I say over 40 years as the British, along with the Americans in stealth mode, have done this with extreme success.
Just a little bit more of history to explain how the Americans along with the British have achieved this. Back in 1948 the British wanted to leave Cyprus and abandon their bases as they had bases in Egypt. But the Americans back then told the British to stay as they had to protect the Americans, British and other European countries interest in the Middle East, that is the Oil. What the British and the French did not know at he time is that the Americans had already put into motion for Nasser to come into power in Egypt and had already made agreements with him to oust the British and the French from Egypt, hence the Sues War in the fifties. How many Cypriots know that at that time in our history over 30,000 French troops passed through Cyprus on their way to Egypt to fight along side the British?
Again I say that we should, I mean Cypriots and real Cypriots at heart no matter if you are Greek speaking or Turkish speaking stick together and become real brothers as in the end whether we like it or not we are only Cypriots and nothing else. We are not Turkish and we are definitely not Greeks. I am a Cypriot and I am proud of this fact as all Cypriots should be. I say to all foreign powers, British, Greece, Turkey and the Americans leave us alone and let us finally be able to live in peace and unity with each other.
I have lived in the UK since 1957 and i have also been a volunteer in the Greek Cypriot army from 1973 till 1975. And yes i had to fight during the 1974 invasion on the front lines, thank God I was not hurt. I experienced many scenarios during my 2 years in the army in Cyprus. the fanaticism of the Greek Officers from Greece and our own percentage of Greek Cypriot community in the Army, but not all Greek Cypriots agreed with the Greek Officers or the Greek Cypriot fanatics bent on achieving Enosis with Greece at any cost. this period of my life was extremely sad and left many scars in my mind as to how humans can become so bitter and twisted and have so much hatred between themselves, that was put there by a minority and not how the majority of Cypriots really felt and believed.
All I knew back in the UK is that apart from the extremist from both communities we lived together, Greek and Turkish Cypriots, and loved each other as we were first Cypriots in our hearts, that is the Greek speaking and Turkish speaking Cypriots in the UK. I have many Turkish Cypriot friends back in the UK. I say back in the UK since for the last 4 years I have moved back to Cyprus and sadly to say many Cypriots have still not been able to see that we can only move forward and upwards together. I must also say that i have Turkish Cypriot friends in the occupied Northern part of Cyprus as well who have moved back. But sadly to say more Turkish Cypriots have moved off the Island than are still living in Cyprus. This is why our Turkish Cypriots brothers have become a minority in our own country. I say to some of the Greek Cypriots and Turkish Cypriots stop acting like you are God and accept that we must all live in Cyprus together in peace and prosperity.
What frightens me the most is our politicians here in Cyprus on both sides. They are puppets of both Greece and Turkey and some even puppets of the British and the Americans. There can never be Enosis with Greece as this also can never be for the Turkish Cypriots with Turkey. So lets start looking to the real future which is we want it to be and become. We, together, can be the envy of all countries that are in the Mediterranean Sea, as we could have been if not for outside interference.
I say to my real Turkish Cypriot Brothers come forward and stand together with the real Greek Cypriots, and be Cypriots together, who want pace and are proud of being Cypriots together. Don't you all believe that enough time has gone by to heal all the wounds that had been created by both communities?

No comment from the GC propaganda dept on the mail referring to the Greek Cypriot author Antonis Angastiniyotis? The silence is deafening!
Obviously correct when he says that period between 1963 and 1974 does not exist in the mindset of GC,s.
Most appear to be more interested in the Kurds in Turkey; Why?

zig go back to looking after your sheep and make sure you dont lose your RoC passport otherwise you wont be able to travel to Cyprus. I guess you keep the identity element a secret. Cyprus is and will always belong to the Cypriots not any other outside 3rd party. turkey wants to keep the Cyprus card in order to gain for herself forward steps towards the membership of the eu.
Cyprus Conscious comments:
In any settlement of the Cyprus problem, it will be critical the people who will be staying in Cyprus, will have to abide by the Cypriot Law, which in turn will be coming from the European law.
There is no but.....and there is no may be.......
We will need to start building on something. Whatever will be the agreement of the Cyprus problem, needs to take into consideration many factors. One perhaps is the reality but we should not forget that we do not need statements after 3 years....that WE HAD TO SIGN and now since is not working we change our minds.
