Vietnamese woman ‘locked up, fed only bread and water’
Topic tags
CyprusA VIETNAMESE woman locked in a garage during the hours she was not working was fed only bread and water, immigrant support group KISA has claimed.
According to KISA (Action for Equality, Support, Anti-racism), as soon as the woman arrived at the house she was to work in her employers confiscated her travel documents and mobile phone, forced her to work 14-hour days seven days a week, and kept her locked in the garage whenever she was not working around the house, feeding her only bread and water.
The organisation has also blamed Limassol police for not doing enough to protect her. KISA said the woman paid $5,000 to work in Cyprus and was employed by a Limassol school teacher.
While the woman has now been released from her employer’s home, KISA claims police have failed to inform Social Welfare Services about the case as mandated by law and that they have ignored the relevant provisions of the country’s anti-trafficking legislation.
Police Spokesman Michalis Katsounotos countered that police could not find any evidence of the allegations. “The allegations were that she was locked in the garage. We went to the house and did not find anything,” he said.
Katsounotos also said that the woman did not make any allegations against her former employer in her complaint to police and in turn police have no legal right to prosecute her. “There is no evidence for us to make a prosecution against the employer,” he said.
According to KISA, the Migration Department agreed to help find the woman another job but refused to transfer her complaint to the police because it did not want to “complicate the situation further.”
KISA head Doris Polycarpou said that human trafficking for labour exploitation is becoming an increasingly common problem in Cyprus and that the Migration Department tends to address the labour aspects of those cases but ignores their trafficking aspects. “The Migration Office tries to transfer it from an issue of trafficking to a labour dispute issue,” he said. “Our impression is that they are trying to solve problems in relation to employment without recognising people as victims of trafficking.
“This is why they promised to find her new employment,” he added.
Polycarpou also claimed that the Migration Department has dealt with the same teacher in several incidents in the past. “The employer is known by them to constantly violate the rights of her employees,” he said.
Katsounotos said however that police “do not know anything” about her.
“Probably the woman from Vietnam didn’t accept the circumstances of the work and that is why she wants to abandon [the job], to find another employer. That is my opinion,” said Katsounotos.
Polycarpou offered a different opinion, saying that police chose to not charge the teacher “because it is too much for this society to take employers to court. Because if they convict an employer this employer will go to prison for three to five years, so they probably consider it too much.
“Or maybe it is because she is a Cypriot, or a teacher, or a woman. I don’t know,” he said.

this is a prime example of cyprus and the cypriots, the true colour of these racist, sexist lieing bastards and how the government departments, police and immigration are just corrupt useless excuses for people. when is europe going to do something about this banana republic and government. note how the loud mouthed cypriots have kept quiet. can you imagine if this was a none cypriot that did this. can you begin to understand the tc a little now and why the invasion took place. the so called gc are truly horrible people, worse than animals.......

It is time for Cyprus to stop hiring workers from any third world country.

These things still happen here in MODERN CYPRUS, but we are very quick to point out the war crimes that the Turks made against us right? How is that for double standards?
ben dover comments:
this is NOT isolated behaviour on the part of an idividual - its common to treat foreign workers like dirt in Cyprus - take their passport, threaten to report them to the authorities,in some cases hit them or even suspend their day off..and treat them like a lesser being.
disgraceful behaviour - Shame on Cyprus, centre for modern day slavery.
Demetris from Larnaca comments:
The police could not find any evidence for physical abuse and exploitation. So that means that this "employer" was able to substantiate proper wage payments and employer contributions for taxes and benefits? Do we need to put three government agencies in one room and lock the door until they figure it out?
Joe Citizen from Limassol comments:
Of course the criminals here would cover the tracks nicely. Who would expect them to leave evidence in the garage?
Police turning a blind eye to detestable situations like this is another 'perk' that civil servants 'expect' to enjoy. Kudos to KISA for living up to their expectations but it's a shame they don't have more legal 'bite'. It's impossible to consider ourselves a civilised society when we allow people to commit these crimes and to add insult to injury, by an education professional that truly should know and feel better. As for the police, this has certainly done nothing towards improving their lacklustre image. If anything, it has highlighted a culture of narrow-mindedness and voluntary incompetence when it suits. Sad, very sad. I hope the poor girl gets a better deal not only for her sake but also to show that not all of us are like that. To the pathetic teacher, you will not be prosecuted but you should hang your head in shame not only for doing what you did but, perhaps worse, for thinking that you had a right to do it or that it was the correct thing to do.

Give me that teacher in my care for a month , I would like to treat her the same way she treated that poor worker ..
Any self respecting parents should find out who this teacher is and refuse to have her teach there children ..
I cannot get this into my head , why a modern day person thinks they can treat another human like this ..
Also why is the Migration Department still allowing this woman to have a forign house keeper , she should have been black listed a long time ago ....
Alex from London comments:
Cyprus is becoming an embarrassment! It cannot be called a modern, sophisticated and civilised society when this sort of thing goes on with impunity.
The teacher (or slave owner to be precise) should receive a severe prison sentence and those living in their household (adults) should also receive a sentence as accessories. Failure by the authorities to take stiff action will show that Govt, Law enforcement and society in general is morally bankrupt ...actually they already are!

Is RoC really belongs to the EU? In other 20 member states I haven't seen such extent of exploitation and slavery of far east employees as here. High time to change attitude, even the greeks are not the chosen people of this world, who should be allowed to exploit another human being 12 -16 hours a day in the 21st century! (And of course for 200 euros a month).
I wonder if anywhere in Europe this would be accepted what happens here, as roumanian builders kept as slaves, no salary, almost no food, this was the second case of a so called "decent cypriot gentleman".
The "employer" is a teacher, teaching our sons and daughter on humanity, mutual respect and cypriot hellenism
“Probably the woman from Vietnam didn’t accept the circumstances of the work and that is why she wants to abandon [the job], to find another employer. That is my opinion,” said Katsounotos
Consequently she can be kept on bread and water, and even if her master desires, can be deported for disobeyance!
I really can not comment on this.... This police force is a rotten egg...
